What Does SEO Cost in 2026? Prices & Budgets Compared
“It depends” – that is probably the answer you hear most often when it comes to the budget for search engine optimization.
But why is a flat-rate price quote so difficult?
In a world where AI and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) are changing the rules of the game for visibility, the pricing models of SEO agencies have also become more complex. So that you're not left in the dark, we bring light into the thicket of SEO costs.
In this article, using practical examples and overviews, we explain which costs you really have to reckon with.
The most important points in brief: What does SEO cost in 2026?
- Monthly SEO support: Reputable options start at approx. €1,000. Medium-sized companies usually invest €2,000 to €5,000 for measurable results. Large companies mostly well above that.
- Hourly rates: The market standard is €100 to €150. At prices well below that, expertise or an individual strategy is often missing.
- One-time setup: A solid foundation (audit, keyword research, strategy) often starts at a flat €3,000.
- Does AI make SEO cheaper? No. The budget merely shifts: fewer costs for pure text production, but more effort for strategy, fact-checks, and additional optimizations for AI search engines (GEO).
- Duration & ROI: Usually around 6 months until first successes. In the long term, the ROI is often higher than with paid advertising (ads).

SEO always involves various areas of work. At the start of the optimization by an agency, an SEO audit and a keyword research have to be carried out once. From this, an SEO strategy is derived. The costs for audit, research, and strategy together start at a one-time €3,000.
The implementation of the strategy takes place through monthly support. The costs for monthly SEO support start at many SEO agencies at €1,000 per month and can be significantly higher depending on the effort involved in the support.
A rule of thumb regarding costs is always:
“The more the agency is supposed to deliver, the more expensive the SEO services are, too.”
If you can't afford complete monthly support due to a budget for SEO that is too small, it can be worthwhile to book individual services. Many agencies offer so-called individual packages here.
Disclaimer
All prices mentioned are estimates and average values. The actual costs depend on many factors, such as:
- size of the website / number of URLs
- competition / competitive environment
- How many search terms are to be optimized?
- What has been optimized so far / how much still needs to be optimized?
- What can the client handle themselves?
- What should the SEO agency take over?
To make these individual items more tangible, the following examples show what total monthly budget companies should realistically reckon with.
What SEO costs (explained with an example based on hours of effort)
What follows is an example breakdown of how much time the optimization of a website would take. Here is an example for a larger web project in a moderately competitive market:
SEO audit of the complete website
- Technical analysis (OnPage) – 5 hrs.
- Content audit (analysis of the content) – 3 hrs.
- OffPage analysis (link profile analysis) – 2 hrs.
Keyword research and analysis
- Research for suitable keywords – 7 hrs.
- Review of the competition – 1 hr.
- Determining the search intent for all suitable keywords – 1 hr.
- Defining all relevant keywords into a keyword set – 2 hrs.
- Keyword mapping – 1 hr.
SEO strategy development
- OnPage strategy – 2 hrs.
- Content strategy – 1 hr.
- Link building strategy – 2 hrs.
- Discussion and sign-off on the strategy – 2 hrs.
= One-time effort for SEO audit, keyword research, and SEO strategy: 30 hours (x €100 per hr. = €3,000 one-time)
Monthly support and performance review
- OnPage optimization – 5 hrs.
- Creation of new content – 4 hrs.
- Link management – 5 hrs.
- Reporting and monitoring – 1 hr.
= Monthly support effort: 15 hours (x €100 per hr = €1,500 per month)
Disclaimer: This is only an example calculation. Larger online shops and websites can of course involve a significantly higher support effort, and there the prices for complete support can start at €5,000 and more.
Further examples: From local to e-commerce
To make the abstract prices more tangible, these three typical budgets from practice help for ongoing support:
Local providers (e.g. trades, law firms, doctors)
- Budget: €700 – €1,500 per month
- Focus: Regional visibility, optimization of the Google Business Profile (Maps), and local landing pages.
Mid-sized companies & B2B (e.g. IT, industry, consulting)
- Budget: €2,000 – €5,000 per month
- Focus: Supra-regional lead generation in the DACH region, building expert status through specialist content (E-E-A-T), and link building.
Large online shops & portals
- Budget: From €4,000 per month (open-ended)
- Focus: Technical SEO (crawl budget, indexing), scaling of product texts, and holding your own against strong market leaders such as Amazon.
Offers in the low three-digit range (e.g. €299) mathematically often cover only 1–2 working hours. In competitive markets, sustainable visibility cannot be built with that.
How does the optimization by an SEO agency work?
In order to be able to name a precise cost framework, it is important to find out whether the client's website has already been optimized and how much work has already been invested in SEO. Has a lot already been done here, or are there still numerous problems?
Audit (one-time costs)
What has been optimized so far, and which errors and open issues still exist on the website?
Such questions are usually answered with an audit / an analysis of the complete website. In doing so, all potential on the website that could prevent good positions on Google is recorded. The link profile also contributes significantly to the success of any optimization and should be checked very carefully, since Google and co. have in the past detected and penalized excessive manipulation of the link profile.
Keyword research (one-time costs)
Research for relevant search terms is part of a successful optimization. Here it has to be worked out together with the client which keywords suit the company. Which search terms have chances of a high conversion, and for which terms does the client's website even have the possibility of moving up at all?
Creating the strategy and setting goals (one-time costs)
After the audit is completed and the keyword set has been signed off, an SEO strategy including a project plan can be created from it. Which measures have to be taken, and in what chronological order do they take place?
The SEO strategy defines how much time and resources should be invested in OnPage optimization, content creation, link removal and building, and much more, in order to achieve the previously defined goals of the client's website, such as more traffic, higher visibility, more conversion, etc., through search engine optimization.
Implementation (monthly costs)
Implementation is about carrying out the established SEO strategy (operationally). Here the costs can vary greatly, because there are clients who manage individual implementations, e.g. OnPage optimization, relatively well on their own (with guidance / supervision), and again clients who, for example, don't have any programmers and copywriters and where the SEO agency has to “get its hands dirty” itself, which of course significantly increases the monthly costs.
Monitoring & performance review
The topic of search engine optimization is usually never completely finished, but rather an ongoing process. Monitoring and the performance review show which SEO measures worked how well and where improvements need to be made.
Also, in the meantime, new updates by the search engines can occur again and again, resulting in new ranking factors and opportunities for search engine optimization.
There is therefore usually no conclusion to the optimizations, and permanent support in SEO is often recommended in order to always be able to keep optimizing and react quickly to changes.
The influence of AI (ChatGPT, Gemini & co.): Are SEO costs falling?
A question that many agencies currently keep hearing constantly in client meetings:
“Doesn't AI (artificial intelligence) make SEO much cheaper now?”
At first glance the logic seems coherent: ChatGPT, Gemini & co. write texts in seconds, tools analyze data at the push of a button. Shouldn't monthly SEO support then cost only half as much?
The honest answer is: No. The costs don't fall, they shift.
Anyone who believes they'll land far up on Google with raw AI texts will be disappointed. Since everyone now has access to these tools, the web is being flooded with mediocre content (AI slop). To still stand out here, you need more quality than ever – and quality costs time (and therefore money).
The budget flows less into pure “writing work” and more into these new areas:
- The “human touch” as a ranking factor: Google and users recognize AI blah-blah immediately. An SEO copywriter becomes a “content architect” who factually checks AI texts, enriches them with real expert opinions (E-E-A-T), and adds a human note. This is often more elaborate than writing the text yourself.
- Optimization for AI Overviews, ChatGPT & co.: We no longer optimize only for the classic “10 blue links.” Your brand has to be present on the web in such a way that it is cited by AI systems (such as Google's AI Overviews) as a trustworthy source. This is called GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) – and that requires technically clean data and extremely high authority.
- Strategy instead of busywork: Since AI answers simple questions (“How do I repair a printer?”) directly in the search result (zero-click), we have to develop strategies that engage users for complex purchase decisions.
AI makes the agency's work more efficient, but at the same time Google's requirements have risen massively. Anyone who cuts the budget and simply switches to “AI autopilot” risks being sorted out as spam. Instead, invest the budget in a better user experience and genuine expertise – that is the only moat that an AI cannot copy.
Billing models of SEO agencies
There is a wide variety of possible pricing models among SEO service providers. Here the client should carefully consider which one is right for them. An agency only works as much as its budget allows. The most common method here is billing according to an hourly rate.
SEO prices / hourly rates
The hourly rate of SEO service providers varies and is usually €100 to €150 net per hour. Larger well-known SEO firms have a significantly higher hourly rate, while still fresh, unknown freelancers or junior SEOs charge a lower hourly rate.
With billing by hourly rates, the highest transparency is possible. However, there is also criticism of this model, because here billing is only by time and not by know-how. A top SEO pro can, for example, complete a keyword research significantly faster than a junior. Is it then fair for the work to be paid by an hourly rate? That is certainly open to debate, because of course the senior is significantly more expensive, but whether their work is fairly paid via higher hourly rates is another question …
Continuing: Anything that lies below or above the mentioned €100 to €150 should be viewed with caution. How can someone optimize a website for the search engines if they receive such a low wage for it that they can't even afford the relevant SEO tools with it?
Search engine optimization is still a very successful marketing channel, and many companies are willing to pay correspondingly high hourly rates for experts.
Junior SEO and Senior SEO
Junior and senior SEO
There are agencies that make a further distinction here between junior SEO and senior SEO and bill these at separate hourly rates. Simpler tasks are handled by the cheaper junior SEO and demanding SEO topics by the senior. In the example of the time breakdown of an SEO campaign further below, we left this out for the sake of simplicity and listed average values.
Flat rate
With a flat rate, all services are billed at a fixed amount. Regardless of whether more or less work was done in a given month, the client always pays the same amount. One point of criticism of this approach is often the lack of transparency.
“So what exactly did they do to my website for the flat rate?” many customers then wonder when being served on a flat-rate basis.
Agencies have to be careful here and try to show, via detailed reporting and regular calls, everything that was done. The flat rate can, however, work very well for both sides if everything is communicated clearly.
Commission model
With this model, billing is performance-based. The client seemingly simply shifts the risk onto the provider and only pays when previously defined successes are achieved. Here clients should be very careful. In practice we have repeatedly seen how other SEO agencies regularly charged their clients for achieving pointless goals (e.g. rankings for keywords that aren't searched for and have no competition).
We therefore cannot recommend such a model. An agency has to be able to work economically and will never expose its financial security to such a great danger as the ranking fluctuations on Google – rankings simply cannot be guaranteed, and hardly any reputable provider works according to such a model.
Revenue-share model
With this billing model, the agency shares in the revenue / the sales that come about via the website or the shop. In our experience, such a collaboration rarely works, because one of the two parties usually feels disadvantaged. Companies that have to pay too much, or agencies that simply earn too little – one of them is always dissatisfied here.
That is why our recommendation is a combination of flat rates and bonuses (explained shortly) or billing by hourly rates.
Combination
With a combination, fixed costs that have to be paid monthly are agreed upon. If, on top of that, previously defined goals are achieved within a certain period, the agency receives bonus payments. Alongside billing by hourly rates, a combination billing model can make sense for both parties.
The service provider gets enough money for the fixed costs and is correspondingly rewarded for achieving goals.
Why so expensive? Should you try to negotiate SEO prices?
Again and again it happens that clients try to negotiate prices. It is completely normal in a free economy to ask for a price reduction, however something like this will fall on deaf ears at many agencies, since many calculate their costs exactly and have fixed costs to bear. If the contractor gets less money than was calculated, this can limit the quality of their work. At many SEO service providers, the trainee is then let onto the project more often instead of the pro.
What clients like to forget: In addition to a high investment of time and corresponding labor costs, the SEO agency also bears further costs:
- Costs for analysis tools such as Ryte.com or Screaming Frog
- Additional costs from monitoring tools such as Sistrix or SerpWatcher
- Office costs, further training costs for their employees, and much more …
Here the client pays a high hourly rate for professional support and for the agency's many years of know-how. Because in the area of SEO, laypeople can quickly make mistakes that can have fatal effects on the rankings and thus on visitor numbers.
In the worst case, mistakes can lead to serious financial bottlenecks, for example at online shops.
Don't skimp on the budget: “Buy cheap, buy twice.”
That is why companies should only let absolute professionals at an appropriate hourly rate near their website if they want their project to be well looked after.
Are there alternatives to a cost-intensive engagement with an agency?
One option is to get an SEO freelancer instead of an agency, who advises here and serves as support as best they can. Especially for smaller projects with a small budget, this can work very well. But then a lot also has to come from the client themselves, such as text creation, programming, and much more. An SEO freelancer cannot handle all the tasks in SEO alone. They should rather be used as a consultant.
Can you do SEO yourself?
SEO can in principle be learned and implemented yourself. However, the time investment is high, and many things you only learn through experience. Agencies take over this work so that companies can concentrate on their core business and experienced specialists carry out the optimization.
A comparison: You can also wire the electrics in your own house yourself. That is possible. Nevertheless, there is a reason electricians do this professionally. Experience prevents mistakes that can become expensive later. It's similar with SEO.
To learn SEO yourself, we recommend a few sources:

Why invest in SEO at all?
If there is no SEO budget at all and the client also doesn't want to carry out any search engine optimization themselves, you can look for an alternative to SEO.
For very small budgets, we recommend investing in Google Ads. The setup is relatively simple, and you see first successes relatively quickly here. However, compared to SEO, the traffic and the conversion are gone immediately as soon as you stop the Google Ads. The growth potential in SEO is also significantly greater compared to SEA.
SEO has one of the highest returns on investment (ROI) in the entire online marketing cosmos.
The search engines are used day in, day out by the entire (internet) world for research purposes – companies that aren't found here for their core topics lose potential customers. That is why the SEO channel should not be neglected.
Beware of black sheep – tips for finding the right SEO agency
Loss-leader offers, such as SEO for 150 euros per month or similar prices, are often not a good deal. If the average hourly rate is €100, the agency can therefore only work on the website for 1.5 hours a month. Otherwise the agency isn't working economically.
Even the use of a junior SEO will hardly be able to get more out of it here – on top of that there is the danger that someone with very little experience can do great damage to the client's website.
The choice of the right SEO agency for support should therefore be very carefully considered.
So that, as a client, you don't fall for the black SEO sheep and avoid being ripped off, you should …
- … keep your distance from agencies that guarantee number 1 spots on Google. No one can do something like that and it is simply dubious
- … avoid service providers who claim to know someone at Google.
- … react very skeptically to cold calls. Particularly dubious providers are very aggressive here.
- … not sign any long-term contracts (>12 months). Better to first book small packages, such as a keyword research, to test out the collaboration.
- … select an agency that presents its services completely transparently, e.g. via weekly/monthly calls, SEO reporting, and proof of performance.
- … decide on an agency that already has experience in the client's industry and can show cases.
Whether an SEO service provider is really good can usually only be determined from the actual collaboration onwards. Further valuable tips for finding the right SEO agency for yourself can be found on our blog: Finding a good / the best SEO agency .
When can you expect first results?
When first results in SEO become visible depends, as so often, on very many factors. As a rule, first results are visible after about six months. Depending on the project and competition, this can also go faster or even take significantly longer.
Clients should not make the mistake of stopping the optimization as a “flop” just because no successes are visible in the first few months. SEO simply needs time and patience.
It can simply take time, especially until a website earns “trust” and thereby traffic and leads from Google. The search engines have to be able to filter out millions of spam pages and pieces of information day in, day out – which is why every website first has to earn its trust.
What budget should companies plan for in order to be able to work sensibly with a search engine optimization agency?
Depending on the size of the website and the goals, companies should provide a one-time budget for the audit and the strategy development. The costs for this together start at €2,000, but can be significantly higher for medium to larger websites.
The costs for the monthly support can usually only be correctly estimated after the audit and the strategy development, based on the implementation effort. The prices for monthly SEO support start at €1,000, but can also be significantly higher, depending on what the agency is supposed to deliver and what is taken over by the client.
Why should the OnPage optimization and the OffPage measures be carried out continuously in search engine optimization?
In many niches there is high competitive pressure. The competition doesn't sleep and optimizes its websites as well. New topics (trends) come along, new product developments, new insights, and much more frequently change your niche, and that is why a company with its website also always has to be able to adapt anew.
So that the traffic can be maintained continuously and in the long term, the support should also be carried out continuously.
How is the value of search engine optimization calculated?
There are two options here. On the one hand, to look only at the value of the SEO traffic, and on the other hand, to determine the actual ROI:
The value is often calculated by comparing organic traffic vs. paid traffic (How much would you have had to pay if you had bought the SEO traffic via Google Ads?). Example: For one keyword the website gets 1,000 visitors a month. This search term costs €2 per click via Google Ads. The value of this SEO traffic is then €2,000. A very simple calculation that doesn't say much.
It therefore makes more sense to calculate the ROI (“What does it bring in terms of leads for my company”).
To calculate the SEO ROI, the costs of the optimization have to be set in relation to the website's revenue:
ROI % = (Revenue from organic search – SEO costs) / SEO costs * 100
To calculate the ROI even more precisely, various points have to be coordinated, such as what a lead is worth and much more. You can find a detailed guide on this here.

Summary
Finding out the exact costs for SEO is only possible through a conversation: Contact the SEO service provider you trust and have a quote drawn up. The SEO prices mentioned here in the article are only estimates and can vary greatly, depending on how big your website is, which goals are to be achieved, and how strong the competition is.
The SEO agencies also have partly very different prices: A well-known, large agency with several company locations is often much more expensive than a small, lean SEO agency with significantly lower fixed costs.
Also bear in mind that SEO is not an exact science. There are uncertainty factors that an agency can only influence to a limited extent, such as new Google updates and ranking factors. Be careful with offers that seem too cheap or are built too heavily on a performance basis – every agency has to be able to act in an economically sensible way.
