Finding the Best SEO Agency: How to Recognize Good Agencies in 2026
The SEO industry is suffering! It suffers from a few black sheep whose business model is based on dubious methods.
Through the use of dubious, unprofessional methods, the SEO goals are only reached in the short term (or usually not at all) before the rankings drop again. The result: companies lose trust in SEO measures and SEO agencies.
A customer who has had negative experiences is usually twice as cautious and can rarely still be won over for search engine optimization (Search Engine Optimization) these days.
So it's worth taking a very close look when searching for a good SEO agency. Which further points you should pay attention to so that you find the best SEO agency for yourself, you'll learn in this article.
The most important points in brief:
- There is no single best SEO agency! It always depends on which industry you operate in: online shops, B2B, local companies, publishers, etc. each have different SEO challenges.
- So pick out agencies that have completely specialized in SEO and that have already successfully proven themselves in your industry or your field (case studies). Be careful with full-service or online marketing agencies that supposedly can do everything: no, they often simply can't!
- Buy cheap, pay twice. With SEO for €500 per month at an hourly rate of €100 (the average hourly wage of an SEO), the project can only be looked after for 5 hours. That's usually far too little to move the needle.
- Don't tie yourself down forever right away – better to book SEO packages first, such as an audit and an SEO strategy, in order to better assess the agency's work. Also pay attention to the contract term and the notice periods. Some dubious providers try to tie their customers down long-term with restrictive contracts.
- The business model of dubious SEO agencies is based on winning as large a mass of customers as possible, which is why they engage in intensive cold acquisition. So: Be careful with cold calls!
- Try to learn the SEO basics through tutorials. Only if you understand something about SEO yourself can you tell, in a conversation with an SEO agency, whether rip-off artists or real professionals are at work.
Why are “good SEO agency” and “best SEO agency” even searched for on Google at all?
The good, the bad, the … best seo agentur? Why should a user search for a “good” or even the “best” SEO service provider?
The reason is mainly the following:
The customers are uncertain whether they will receive a good service; they search on Google for “good/best SEO agency” because they are looking for a kind of “advance guarantee” to gain more certainty. This uncertainty, however, is fundamentally rooted in the fact that this concerns the area of services. It's not about “tangible” products whose properties are known, but about “intangible” services whose quality and results only become apparent during and after the execution.
This is comparable to a car repair shop; here too you can not directly tell in advance whether the mechanic is able to repair the car properly. This means there is always an uncertainty factor when you commission a service. So the client has to give the service provider, in this case the SEO agency, a leap of faith.
Does that mean they should blindly expose themselves to the risk and accept that something might possibly go wrong?
No, it does not.
There is indeed no direct guarantee for the quality and the result of SEO services, but there are INDIRECT INDICATORS that can serve as clues for a client. The car mechanic hangs the master craftsman's certificate in their workshop; the fact that they passed the master craftsman's exam signals to the customer that they bring the necessary qualifications and that the customer can therefore trust them.
For choosing a good SEO agency there are likewise quality indicators, which we'll present here.
There is no single best SEO agency…
If you, dear reader, are looking for the best SEO agency, we can already tell you one thing in advance: there is no single, best SEO agency. That's because SEO is not an exact science, yet many people think there must be THE one agency that knows all the ranking factors and all the “Google secrets” and can bring any website to position 1 with one hundred percent certainty. That, however, is a myth. There are many good SEO agencies. Pick an agency that is passionate about the topic of SEO. How to find one, you'll learn here.
The shift: SEO in times of AI and GEO
Millions of people today no longer search only via Google, but ask directly at ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity – and receive ready-made answers instead of a list of links. Anyone who, as a shop or company, doesn't appear in these answers loses visibility that classic SEO can no longer make up for.
A good SEO agency has to understand and address this. Content has to be structured and prepared in such a way that AI systems recognize and cite it as a reliable source. That's a different discipline than optimizing for classic Google rankings – and many agencies have not (yet) fully completed this shift.
What does that mean when searching for an agency?
When evaluating potential agency partners, you should specifically ask about strategies for dealing with generative search results.
Agencies that merely offer outdated tactics without taking the current AI landscape into account are often no longer sufficiently equipped for the challenges of modern search.
This is how you recognize a professional and good SEO agency
To make choosing the right SEO agency easier for you, we've summarized a few points here that can speak for or against an agency.
1. Be careful with firm commitments and promises
Hopefully the fewest customers will fall for this. You should give a wide berth to an agency that promises rankings (we'll get you into the top ten on Google after X time). No matter how good the SEOs working at the agency are, there is always only a limited influence from the outside on the rankings at Google. Moreover, the factors for good rankings are constantly changed by Google (without prior notice, of course). Guarantees are therefore ruled out.
An SEO company that claims to have contacts at Google itself, to be a partner or similar, and to therefore be able to firmly promise rankings, has definitely not earned any trust with such statements.
2. References & case studies
Ask for a current case study. Many agencies have at least one or, better, several case studies on successful client projects to demonstrate their successes. Don't let yourself be distracted by great images and the visual presentation. What counts here are hard facts such as:
- Was visibility increased?
- Were the traffic and the click numbers increased?
- Could the new visitors be converted into leads or customers?
- Was the client being looked after able to increase their revenue through the SEO company's measures?
Good case studies should be something every agency can present and explain in detail what was implemented and what success these measures had.
3. Industry knowledge
It's even better if the SEO agency has knowledge in your industry and can even present a case from it. That is not a must, but it can show that the agency has already been able to gather important experience in this niche/industry.
4. SEO quality certificate
Don't let yourself be dazzled too much in your decision by certificates, since an SEO seal of quality says little about the SEO company's work. Certificates indicate that one or more employees have acquired a qualification.
That is good, but that alone is not meaningful enough to judge whether your website is also competently looked after. For that, you have to check further points that are shown in this article.
5. “Cobblers wear the worst shoes” – SEO agencies don't
The saying that a cobbler themselves has the worst shoes does not apply to SEO agencies.
After all, they should know their craft and also show it off publicly a little on their website. Besides an appealing website, an informative blog, guest posts on other websites, recaps of conferences, downloadable white papers, videos or similar content formats can also indicate that the people at work here know what they're doing.
6. Cold acquisition? Here you should be careful!
Cold acquisition is not automatically negative. It is practiced by many (even well-known) agencies. However, customer cold acquisition also means that here you have an agency that invests time, manpower and money in such tactics and therefore possibly has fewer resources available in the end for the actual optimization of websites.
Unfortunately, especially the black sheep of the SEO industry use this aggressive style of acquiring new customers, which is why you should be doubly careful with an agency's cold call. Here it's a matter of weighing things up and evaluating the conversation:
- Were you given false promises in the conversation (we'll get you to position 1 on Google)?
- Could your questions about SEO be answered (with which SEO measures would the agency optimize your website)?
- Did the caller intensively engage with your site in advance?
- Is there a pushy attempt to get you to sign a contract?
7. Be careful with agencies from abroad
Another warning sign that many initially underestimate: agencies from countries like Dubai, India or other regions that specifically target German companies and advertise with low prices.
The problem here is not the origin itself, but what's behind it. Agencies that acquire German SMEs from Dubai often work with standardized mass packages that don't really fit any industry or any market. They know neither the German market nor the competitive dynamics in your niche. And if something goes wrong, the legal situation is almost hopeless for you as the client.
Good SEO also requires a deep feel for language. Anyone who creates texts and optimizations for the German-speaking market has to understand the language, the search intentions and the cultural nuances – that's not achievable with translation tools, AI and templates.
8. About-us page and company values
The about-us page of an SEO agency is taken seriously far too rarely during the selection – yet it reveals more than any glossy presentation in the initial conversation.
Who is really behind the agency? Are there real team photos or only stock images? Are the founders and employees introduced?
Also important: do the communicated values fit your own company culture? An agency that emphasizes transparency and partnership on equal footing on its website will shape the collaboration differently than one that primarily advertises with growth figures and technology buzzwords.
Read the about-us page and ask yourself honestly: would I like to work with these people? Do I trust this team? If the answer is hesitant, that's already a signal.
9. How intensive is the support?
A reputable agency regularly informs its customers about the next steps in optimizing the website for the search engines. Here you should make sure to have a permanent contact person whom you can also call during normal business hours. It's important that the contact person is not the intern or a salesperson, but the SEO professional themselves, who is currently looking after your site.
Unfortunately, I keep hearing that customers felt left alone at previous agencies or that people simply didn't talk to each other regularly.
With many customers, we talk weekly about the next steps and about the processes. If not by phone, the customer should at least be kept up to date weekly by email. A monthly meeting to discuss the monthly report should also be offered by every normal agency.
Pay attention to how detailed and transparent the SEO report is – were important KPIs included, such as the rankings and the traffic figures?
10. No-obligation get-to-know meeting possible and a first sample received?
If the agency is located near you, it's often not a bad idea to meet in person and form an impression of your counterpart. Does the agency come across as competent and reputable or is it only about a quick, lucrative contract signing?
Many agencies prepare a small initial analysis for such a conversation – so it's completely OK if you politely request such a short analysis. Through this analysis, you can already form a very good impression of whether the agency has SEO competence or not.
In an initial conversation you can also feel free to ask a few questions in order to check how transparently the company works:
- What would a collaboration look like?
- Which analyses are done first and when does the implementation begin?
- Are the SEO staff trained and sent to further training such as conferences?
- Which results are expected and how is success measured?
- Are common Google updates (Helpful Content Update / Core Update, etc.) known to the agency and what is their assessment of them?
Here are some more good example questions from Google itself that you can ask in order to better assess an agency: support.google.com/webmasters/answer.
11. Hourly rates €€€ – How much may it cost?
The hourly rates naturally vary from agency to agency. And freelancers often charge different prices again. Determining an average price is therefore very difficult. Even though there have been numerous surveys on this topic in the past, it may be doubted whether the prices in these surveys are accurate.
So here I give my personal perception of the prices: a reputable hourly rate usually starts at just under €100. However, the hourly rates can be significantly higher, depending on the location and reputation of the agency or the freelancer and which well-known customers they have already served.
For anything that is significantly lower, a healthy dose of skepticism should first be applied.
How can significantly lower prices come about? Rip-off agencies in particular have their tricks here to lure customers with seemingly cheap prices or “offers”. To give an overview, here are the most common billing models with a note on which of them are especially frequently chosen by the dubious agencies.
Certain billing models used by agencies quickly reveal rip-off artists
The billing by hourly rate is frequently chosen – here transparency is high for the customer side. You pay for the work that was actually done. Many dubious providers don't offer such a billing model. That's why you should pay close attention to which billing model you agree to when working with an SEO agency.
Billing by a flat rate
With a flat rate, the SEO agency bills every month according to a fixed amount. No matter which services were provided – the customer always owes the same invoice amount. So the agency doesn't really have to prove what it has done and therefore works for the customer often completely non-transparently. Many customers then wonder what this SEO agency has actually done. This billing method is especially readily offered by dubious SEO companies.
Here customers should be very careful and insist on proof of performance in order to be able to trace what the agency has really done. A good SEO agency always creates transparency in its way of working and keeps its customers up to date regularly through project plans, monthly reportings, meetings, etc.
Commission model
With this model, billing is done on a success basis. Supposedly you only pay for the stated goals. Sounds too good to be true? No reputable SEO agency guarantees rankings and would seriously subordinate its economic success to Google's ranking fluctuations.
With such models, many dubious SEO agencies resort to tricks. For example, achieving rankings for certain keywords is set on a commission basis. Often these keywords are then not relevant at all, are barely searched for and have no competition. Good placements can be achieved quickly here and the agency can cash in – except that the customer gets nothing out of it. Such a billing model should only be entered into with the greatest caution. Good SEO agencies usually forgo this type of model.
Participation model
With this model, the SEO agency shares in the revenues of the shop or the website (participation). Such a collaboration often doesn't work, because either the agency or the customer feels disadvantaged – either the agency earns too little or the customer has to give away too much of their profit.
Reputable SEO agencies rather rarely resort to this billing model.
Combination of billing models
Frequently encountered are so-called combinations of billing models.
A combination of billing models can also be offered by good SEO agencies. Here a monthly base amount is agreed, with which the SEO company can work to achieve the desired goals, such as more visibility, more traffic and more leads via organic search. If these agreed goals are also achieved after a specified time, the agency receives a bonus payment.
Caution should always be exercised with the billing models if it isn't apparent from them what the customer actually has to pay for. Dubious SEO agencies try here to conceal hidden costs or demand a flat rate for services that are then not actually provided in reality. Achieving rankings or other goals as the sole billing model is also often used by the black sheep of the SEO industry. The safest is payment according to the work actually performed: the hourly rate.
12. And let us bind ourselves forever? Keyword: contracts
It's normal that when awarding a contract, both parties (client and contractor) sign a contract. But beware of overly long terms and opaque cancellation clauses (“three months before the end of the contract, otherwise automatic extension by – exaggeratedly – ten years”).
Why does the SEO agency absolutely want to tie a customer to itself through such long contract terms? Is it perhaps afraid of losing you again quickly? If the agency does a good job, then surely no customer will cancel so quickly.
So question terms and notice periods so that you don't experience a rude awakening.
The 5 most common mistakes you shouldn't make when choosing an SEO agency
Why you should ignore supposed secret tricks and promises …
Letting yourself be dazzled by sales: Better to talk to the SEO employee who will also look after you later, and not let yourself be talked at with the sales jargon of the sales department. They often say what you want to hear, but whether the SEO agency is then really good, you still won't know afterward. Talk directly to the SEO expert who will look after you – this is where you'll most likely notice whether the collaboration will work.
Signing long-term contracts: Never sign long-term contracts right away! No matter how good the agency supposedly is – never sign a two-year contract right away, but rather buy small packages as a test first, such as an SEO audit, SEO content, an SEO strategy, some backlinks or a keyword research.
Thinking that the agency will do everything: It's a collaboration. The customer has to do a lot themselves, e.g. review texts, give the agency topic ideas, sign off on strategies and much more.
Not demanding transparency: The agency's services should be as traceable as possible. Request time records and monthly reportings in order to check the SEO agency's work.
Not checking the agency's expertise in advance: Are there negative reviews? Are there successful case studies that prove the expertise – also from your industry? The agency's professional competence should be checked in advance as thoroughly as possible.
Tips for small businesses and tight budgets
You don't always need a fat budget for SEO successes
If there's no big budget, you should consider at least getting professional support at the beginning of the optimization. Beginners can often destroy a lot, so it's helpful to be steered in the right direction by SEO experts. So at the beginning, book individual packages or an SEO consultation, such as a keyword research or an SEO strategy. On the basis of an SEO strategy, a lot can then already be optimized yourself.
We also recommend this approach when choosing an SEO service provider for the monthly SEO support. By booking individual services (SEO measures), you can test their know-how and the collaboration well without committing long-term.
Learning and applying SEO yourself is also an alternative if there's no budget at all. Here, however, the warning that with very little knowledge or half-knowledge in SEO you can also cause damage, which then later an agency has to repair again after all. If you'd like to further educate yourself in the area of SEO, here are some recommended sources:
- Magazine: Websiteboosting
- YouTube: Farbentour channel ;)
- Blog: Learning SEO
Use SEO tools to keep an overview during optimization if you work on your website yourself, e.g. Sitebulb or Seobility. In principle, you should always work with SEO tools, regardless of whether you're a beginner or a professional.
Another alternative would be to forgo SEO as long as no budget is available and instead use other channels. Google Ads, for example, would be a way to generate traffic relatively quickly with a first small budget.
The process for choosing a good SEO company
With this step-by-step guide, you can quickly recognize possible rip-off companies.
- Get quotes from agencies that seem trustworthy and competent at first glance. Don't let yourself be influenced by aggressive cold acquisition; that's often an indicator of less reputable agencies.
- Audit, keyword research and SEO strategy are a must: If an agency doesn't offer you these steps at the beginning of the optimization, the alarm bells should already be ringing. Without an SEO strategy and analysis, no purposeful SEO can be carried out.
- Don't fall for flashy slides and showmen in the initial conversation. There are SEO agencies that are extremely strong in sales but whose support is then poor afterward. So never seek the conversation only with the salesperson, but always with the SEO employee who will also look after you, and ask lots of questions. How does the support work? What are the first steps? What is needed? What does the monitoring look like and how transparent is the work? Good agencies show you exactly what they do through project plans, monthly reportings, etc.
- Free initial analysis/assessment – if unrealistic promises are made to you here or even guarantees are given, that's not a good sign. Also get a second opinion on the initial analysis. Some agencies do pure scaremongering initial analyses. There, the customer's domain is compared with a large, international brand and it's claimed that you have no visibility and urgently need to change this. Martin Witte, for example, has shown here what something like this can look like: online-profession.de/blog/kaltaquise-abzocke-oder-nur-ein-irrtum/.
- Request customer references and case studies: Good SEO agencies usually have several case studies that they are happy to present.
- Don't tie yourself contractually for a longer period right away, but rather test the agency first. You can do this by, for example, initially booking only a one-time OnPage optimization for two to three important landing pages or an SEO strategy, and not the complete package right away.
7 questions by which you'll surely recognize a good SEO agency
Finding the best SEO agency for you is not easy. Especially in the first get-to-know conversation, you should ask important questions – with these, the competence of the SEO service providers can be quickly assessed.
How long does it take until we see the first results in SEO?
“It depends,” professional service providers will usually say. No one can guarantee results in the SEO area. That would be dubious. If the agency guarantees anything here, that's not a good sign. Reputable agencies will at most state their experience, that first results, for example, are often visible after six to twelve months.
How do you prepare content so that it is cited in AI answers like ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews?
This question separates modern SEO agencies from those that got stuck in 2022. AI systems don't cite content because it's well optimized for a keyword, but because it answers a question precisely, completely and in a clearly structured way. A good agency can explain how it builds content this way: with clear answers high up in the text, clear headings, factual precision and an information advantage that other sources don't offer.
If an agency can't answer this question concretely or only vaguely refers to “high-quality content,” that's a clear warning sign. GEO – that is, optimization for generative search answers – is firmly part of modern SEO work.
How is a keyword research carried out at your company?
If the answer here is “We work with these and those SEO tools,” that's all well and good, but the actual keyword research always begins with the interview and a joint brainstorming with the customer.
Otherwise, keyword research resembles pure gambling. And if the keywords are not the ones that are truly relevant to the company, the subsequent OnPage optimization can't be carried out purposefully.
How do you build backlinks?
Ask precisely here: how transparently does the service provider work with OffPage optimization? Are backlinks bought without informing the customer about it? Are pure white-hat SEO measures also offered for link building, such as link building through content marketing? Always ask how strictly the agency adheres to the Google guidelines and how transparently these are reported to you.
How do they deal with Google updates? What do they adapt from them?
How does the SEO company behave with current Google updates? What lessons has it drawn from a current update? Does everything sound plausible or is there an attempt here to dodge the question?
Which case studies and customer testimonials are there?
Every SEO who works successfully for customers can also present case studies to show their expertise. Customer testimonials that confirm the authenticity of the professional expertise should also be requested.
What sets them apart from other agencies? Why should we choose them?
Here you can quickly spot phonies. “We know someone at Google” or “We've cracked all the Google ranking factors” or other boasts quickly point to a dubious outfit you shouldn't work with.
Two requests on our own behalf:
If you're currently looking for an agency, please be fair! No mass inquiries and then demanding complex analyses and other things for free in advance. Also decline agencies with a justification and give feedback.
Fair play should be played on both sides.
We've experienced far too often that long conversations were held beforehand and then people didn't even decline or give any other feedback. Very annoying.
Second request: SEO costs money!
And not exactly a little. So don't skimp on your SEO service provider.
Good SEO agencies that do clean work have their fixed prices, which often start at an hourly rate of approx. €100 (significantly more for larger agencies).
Cheap providers with flat rates like €300 per month for full support simply can't deliver the quality that an SEO agency with fully trained experts, which pays significantly higher wages, can.
Whoever saves here pays twice.
The costs for SEO you can find out here.
Summary: How to find the best SEO agency for your company
Yes, there are several points to consider in order to find a really good SEO agency or perhaps even the personally best SEO agency for you. How the agency ultimately works and whether it's successful, however, can only be determined from the start of the assignment. However, with the quality criteria mentioned above, you can recognize the black sheep of the industry relatively quickly.
No matter how good the agency is, success through SEO only comes about through the collaboration between customers and SEO service providers. The agency's specifications should be implemented promptly by the customer or, even better, taken over by the agency itself. Critical questioning is, of course, allowed.
But we also often experience that customers are not cooperative during implementation and then the set SEO goals are no longer achievable.
And who is to blame then?
The SEO agency, of course ;-).
So always pull together once you've found a good SEO service provider, and then, with a little patience, the desired SEO goals will also be reached.
